To Be Continued, 2011-15

Digital Inkjet Print, Mounted on Plywood

To Be Continued, comprising photographs of Constantin Brancusi’s Endless Column sculptures, collects found photographs in which the limit of the frame - the upper crop of the image - captures Brancusi’s sculpture whilst maintaining the illusion of its infinite progress into the sky. A mixture of historical images, by Brancusi and his peers, and contemporary pictures from, Targu Jiu in Romania, where Brancusi’s sculpture is installed in its biggest manifestation, the images show how the photographic image offers not a finality - a capturing, freezing, or sense of endless recession into the past - but might in fact describe an infinity that can begin to be imagined.

The work exists as an homage not only to Brancusi, but to the Czech artist and poet Jiří Kolář, whose montage with reproduction images offered up a poetics of the reproduction image.
