To Reiterate, 2004-6

Incision on Museum Postcards, Dimensions Variable

To Reiterate is a work which explores the transformation of both image and gesture in the reproduction of the work of art. The work presents museum postcard reproductions of Lucio Fontana’s Concetto Spaziale works, where canvases are cut clincally by the artist. In the reproduction image, Fontana’s gesture, which aims to open a space beyond painting and into pure space, is flattened by the photographic reproduction, becoming a scar which appears but which cannot be experienced, In a delicate gesture, with its much smaller scale, the postcards themselves are cut to re-assert the space behind and around the image - something which has disappeared in the image above.
