DIY IKB, 2007-9

DIY IKB places Yves Klein’s International Klein Blue, a process which the artist patented, through Dulux ICI’s colour-mixing process, which promises consumers a colour match of any object they bring to be scanned. Using a high-quality photographic reproduction, repeated visits to home improvement stores over the course of three years produced 28 different renditions of IKB. The project explores the contest of ownership and industry, alongside a concern for the many variables - scanner and ink calibration, amongst others - which emerge through a reproduction process. The resulting paintings, from images of monochromes scanned by spectrophotometers to produce another monochromic paint, stretch the photographic process into a distinct relationship with painting.
